Surf height is an estimate of breaking face height at the beach derived from offshore significant wave height and period. Ratings follow the Surfline-style scale: Flat, Poor, Poor to Fair, Fair, Fair to Good, Good, Epic. Faces: frown is flat or poor, straight mouth is poor to fair or fair, smile is fair to good or good, the big grin is epic. Size, wind direction and speed, and swell period drive the score.
Predictions are for Manasquan Inlet, 4 mi north; Mantoloking ocean-side times run within a few minutes. Tide station names as listed by NOAA CO-OPS.
Mantostoking is a one-beach forecasting desk. It reads a global wave model at the 20-meter line off Mantoloking, a weather model over the dunes, and the NOAA tide table, and writes them up the way a lifeguard would: how big, how clean, and when to go. It is not affiliated with Surfline, the Borough, the yacht club whose flag it is winking at, or anyone else who might object.
Local rules of thumb encoded here: the beach faces east-southeast, so anything from the west is offshore; the sandbars like mid tide, pushing; northeast windswell arrives short-period and lumpy, while long-period south-southeast energy in hurricane season is what the town is stoked about.
